What does "Soup to Nuts" mean?
There are many steps in creating an Audiobook. You thought writing it was tough?! For example: Script Prep (layout, characters, story arc); Narration (pacing, stamina, consistency); Proofing (is it word for word? Right voice, Right character?); Editing (Pick Ups and Bloopers); Sound Engineering (smooth to the ear? Sound Effects? Balancing multiple voices?); Mastering (Publish-ready). Yeah, I know... it's a LOT.
How much does it cost?
Q. Who is YOUR end customer and what is the value of the audiobook to them?
Q. How do you want to get re-paid by this investment?
Honestly these are the questions to ask.
Always start with your end customer in mind and what you want them to pay you... This will help you determine the value of your audiobook.
Then ask... How good do you want it to be?
What type of production do you want eg Single, Duel, Duet, multi-cast? Sound effects? Music?
How quickly do you want it to be available?
As the saying goes "cheap, fast, good, pick two"
As a VERY general guide $300 -$1000 US per Finished Hour is a good rule of thumb.
Something in-between...
So let's talk about how much you want to do yourself. What needs to be done (by someone) to get an Audiobook ready for the end listener is outlined below.
Script Prep (layout, characters, story arc); Narration (pacing, stamina, consistency); Proofing (is it word for word?); Editing (Pick Ups and Bloopers); Sound Engineering (smooth to the ear? Sound Effects? Balancing multiple voices?); Mastering (Publish-ready)
So let's talk about how much you want to do yourself.
How long does it take from Script to Sale?
Rule of thumb? Allow 8 to 12 weeks. Why? See "Soup to Nuts". This allows for c**k up time.
And remember "good, fast, cheap: pick two"
How do I ensure it sells?
Beyond making sure it's worth your listener's time and money to buy it? It's all down to marketing. On some projects we collaborate with marketing, but as yet we don't do it all for you. There are however plenty of people who are willing and able to help you, and lots of free knowledge to be gained to help you pick the right ones for you.
Oh good grief! I need to lie down now...
Yeah, we feel ya! It's a lot to take on board. But rest assured we're nice to work with, we're honest, and we love audiobooks. So when you're ready, Contact us.
